"THE ONLY WAY TO DEAL WITH AN OPPRESSED WORLD IS TO BECOME SO ABSOLUTELY FREE THAT YOUR VERY EXISTENCE IS AN ACT OF REBELLION."
~IROM CHANU SHARMILA

The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) gives the Indian military the right to arrest, shoot, torture and kill anyone on grounds of mere suspicion. The act has received widespread criticism for human rights violations in the regions of its enforcement.

Irom Sharmila, a civil rights activist and poet, has been on a hunger strike since November 2000, demanding the Indian government repeal the AFSPA.

In an attempt to support her and extend solidarity to the cause, The Root and the Save Sharmila Campaign organized 'Postcard for Irom', asking designers, artists, and illustrators to create postcards of protest. These artworks for peace were exhibited across Mumbai and then sent to Irom herself.

My postcard uses illustration and copy to share both the sacrifices made by Irom in her hunger strike and the violence propagated by the act. You can download the printable version here. Follow Irom's journey and updates of the AFSPA here
